What is Tai Chi?
Tai chi, an ancient Chinese martial art, is now practised by millions round the world as a modern exercise for health. Tai chi consists of a series of slow, fluid, gentle movements, coupled with slow rhythmic breathing. Numerous scientific studies have shown that this gentle mind-body exercise improves balance, strength, flexibility and induces relaxation. It is recommended as adjunct therapy for certain medical conditions, and for prevention of others. Tai chi can be done almost anywhere, at any time, and is suitable for just about anyone.
What is the Tai Chi for Health programme?
Tai Chi for Health programmes are specially designed to improve balance, muscle strength and flexibility with emphasis on mind-body coordination. They were designed by Dr Paul Lam a Sydney-based family physician, and his team of medical and tai chi experts. The exercises are easy to learn, enjoyable and provide many health benefits in a relatively short period of time. They are taught using a standardized teaching method.
What are the benefits of the Tai Chi for Health programme?
Although this programme was initially designed to help arthritis patients, studies have shown that it is especially effective in helping to prevent falls among older adults, besides improving their mobility and overall health. It is supported by many health care institutions around the world. The Centres for Disease Control (CDC) USA, endorsed Dr Paul Lam’s Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention programme in 2013, as an effective intervention for fall prevention among older adults.
